Can you believe that it has already been two weeks!! Where is the time going?? Homework is off and running and the students are doing amazing!! NICE WORK PARENTS!! I always see a parent sign off on the homework and that is exactlly what I want to see. :)
Math:
In math we are focusing on double digit multiplication and moving right along with that. It is great to see how much the students remember from fourth grade and how that applies to what we are doing now. If you ever have any questions on how we do math, don't hesitate to stop in after school and I can show you how we are teaching it. We will be moving into division within the next few weeks!! I know that many of the students are excited about that!!
*Parents Help: everynight for less than 5 minutes have your student recite all their multiplication facts for any digits 1-9. You just have to pick one a night to do with them.
Literacy:
We are still going strong in the Daily 5 and building our Stamina. We are currently up to reading straight for 29 minutes!! WAY TO GO FIFTH GRADERS!!! At home they are to read everynight for at least 30 minutes straight with no distractions. This is a great way for students to continue building their stamina. We are starting to focus on the main idea of a story and why it is important. This will help us because we are starting our non-fiction portion of reading. Your students will be coming home with lots of KNOWLEDGE out of the books we are going to be reading.
*Parents Help: have your student read too you for the 30 minutes or you read to them one night so that they can hear good readers and pick up on your fluency and expression. Ask your students what they are learning during their guided reading times and about non-fiction.
Science/S. Studies:
We are currently working on the life science. We are learning about animal cells and plant cells. We just finished learning all about how to classify organisms and why we need to classify them. We are doing Science this month and then next month we will be doing Social Studies.
Health:
We learned about being positive and saying good things about ourselves. Having a good self concept makes you feel better on a daily basis and helps you to stay focused on your short term and long term goals. We also learned about how picking good friends will help you to stay positive and that falling into the bad group can easily make you fall for peer pressure. We only talk positive about ourselves.
*Parents Help: if you child says something negative about themselves...make them list 5 things positive about themselves and talk about how everyone feels that they have negative things about them, but the positive always outway the negative.
Starting in October students will be filling out our blog everyday or at least a couple of times a week. So it might not be as long after September, but it will always have the same information!!!
Have a great week and we will talk to you soon!!!

2010 School Year
WELCOME BACK!!!
Summer was quick and I am all ready for the year to start. I had a great first year at General Beadle last year and hope to have an amazing class again this year. Many of your students may not recognize my new last name. I was Miss Flint last year and recently got married. The only thing that has changed is my last name. I still expect the same out of all my students.
We are going to use this blog on a daily basis to keep parents, family and friends updated on what we do. I will take care of the first few weeks of the blog and then hand it over to the students to use at the end of the day. Each student will get a chance to write about our day throughout the school year. I will post any information that is important to our class and our school. I hope that you are as excited as I am for the school year and I know together we will get our students to their full potential.
Have a wonderful weekend and I will see everyone on our First Day of School!!!
